Fighting Acne with the Acnelan® Peel

Acne is the most common skin condition in the United States. While most of us associate acne with our teen years, it can occur at any stage of life*. Many of us began our fight with acne around 12 years old, expecting it to improve as we age, only to continue battling for clear skin well into adulthood. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, adult acne cases are increasing throughout the population.

Acne is caused by dirt, oil, dead skin, and bacteria clogging our pores. It can be non-inflammatory (blackheads or comedones, and whiteheads), and inflammatory (papules, pustules, nodules, and acne cysts). Inflammatory acne causes inflammation and swelling and is what we often think of when we refer to acne. One treatment for acne that we offer here at MedSkinEssentials, is the Acnelan® facial peel.

What is an Acnelan® facial peel?

The Acnelan® Peel is an intensive treatment for patients with acne-prone and seborrheic (oily) skin. It can be used in mild to severe acne and is effective in reducing active acne lesions, preventing the formation of new acne lesions, and maintaining a healthy balance in the skin, by minimizing sebum production.

How does Acnelan® work?

Acnelan® uses a formula called the m.acne complex™. The m.acne complex™ is a unique blend of salicylic acid, mandelic acid, and sodium lepargilate. When combined with the exclusive bexaretinyl complex, a deep cleansing and comprehensive renewal of acne-prone and seborrheic skin occur.

You can expect the Acnelan® peel to:

• Minimize redness and swelling of breakouts
• Lighten post-acne hyperpigmentation
• Reduce androgen

What will happen during an Acnelan® peel appointment?

The Acnelan® peel involves multiple stages, the first of which occurs in-office. During your treatment, your provider will cleanse the skin and apply the mask. After the mask is complete, it is neutralized with a post-peel spray that soothes and balances the skin. Finally, a pore-sealing shield is applied to tighten the pores. The Acnelan® treatment pack requires a minimum of three visits to MedSkinEssentials for individual mask applications, each sitting lasting about 30 minutes. The appointments should be scheduled two to four weeks apart, depending on the severity of your acne and your unique skin type. Your provider will work with you to determine the best treatment course for you.

What can I expect after an Acelan® peel?

Immediately following the Acnelan® in-office treatment, you may feel a mild heat sensation, some redness, and irritation, and your skin will be extra sensitive. Your skin will peel and flake over the next three to five days. It is important to be gentle with the treatment area. Do not scratch or pick at your skin, no matter how tempting it may be. Be sure to avoid sun exposure, tanning, and the use of skin care products other than those approved by your provider. Avoid excessive heat such as hot showers, steam rooms, and saunas for 24 hours after treatment.

When will I see results from my Acnelan® peel?

Most patients can expect to see noticeable minimization of breakouts and improvement of overall skin health, but results will vary between individuals. Your provider will develop a full treatment plan during your consultation, customized for your skin type and skin care goals, to best achieve the results you are hoping for.
