Bare Minimum Skincare: If You Do Nothing Else, Do This!

Not all of us enjoy lengthy and involved skincare routines, and many of us who do, between work, family, and busy schedules, simply don’t have the time or energy to complete a seven-step regimen. Taking care of our skin should be a priority (it is the largest organ in our body, after all), but it doesn’t have to be complicated or time-consuming. At the very least, make sure you complete the following steps, no matter what, to ensure your skin’s health.

Cleanse Your Face Twice a Day

Every morning upon waking up and every night before going to bed. Your skin is exposed to debris and toxins all day long and that gunk accumulates on your face, especially if you wear makeup. Washing it all off before you go to bed will cleanse your face of unwanted build-up, debris, and harmful bacteria before you hit the hay. While you sleep, your face is regenerating, creating new skin cells, and sloughing off dead ones that can collect on your face. It is also important to have a clean surface for any follow-up products so that they can penetrate the outer layer of your skin effectively and do their job properly.

Moisturize Twice a Day

Cleansing removes impurities but can also strip some of the natural moisture in your skin. Apply a moisturizer that will keep your skin hydrated, healthy, and balanced. Most moisturizers are designed to address specific skin issues such as signs of aging or acne, and are developed for specific skin types (oily, dry, combination, etc.). Make sure you select the right moisturizer for your needs.

Apply Sunscreen Every Morning

No matter the season or climate, you should be protecting your skin with SPF every single day. Even if your moisturizer contains SPF, apply an actual sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 on top of your skincare products.

Exfoliate Occasionally

If your skin is looking dull, it may need a little extra help, in addition to cleansing, to remove dead skin cells and other leftover gunk that has built up on the surface of your skin. Exfoliating with physical scrubs or chemical exfoliants can give your skin the boost it needs to brighten up your complexion and make way for new skin cells to come to the surface.
