What is dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning is a safe and highly effective non-invasive physical exfoliation procedure. It uses a sterile, surgical blade to gently shave across the skin’s surface. The procedure removes the top layer of dead skin, debris, and the fine vellus hair (“peach fuzz”) that often prevents us from getting a smooth finish with our makeup.
What are the benefits of dermaplaning?
When done by a professional, dermaplaning leads to brighter, smoother, healthier skin. Scraping off the top layer of skin, debris, and hair allows your skin care products to penetrate your skin more effectively. Also, when the top layer of skin cells is removed, your skin immediately begins to regenerate which doesn’t just brighten your complexion; it may also reduce the appearance of acne scars. By physically exfoliating your skin and removing the peach fuzz, makeup will lay evenly, allowing for a flawless finish to your look.
Can I dermaplane at home?
Even though at-home dermaplaning kits are becoming more and more prevalent, we strongly recommend against taking the procedure into your own hands. Dermatomes are surgical blades that are incredibly sharp. You need to be a trained professional to use it correctly or you run the risk of seriously injuring yourself. Other facial razors (like those pictured below) are often marketed as dermaplaning tools for at-home use. However, they are not as sharp or effective as a proper dermatome and will not produce the same results. Plus, they are far more likely to cause skin irritation.
What are the risks of a dermaplane facial?
Dermaplaning is incredibly versatile and is often combined with other facial services to enhance results. Dermaplaning is also an incredibly safe procedure that requires very little preparation, has no downtime, and can be performed as frequently as every two weeks (typically not needed that often, but that’s how gentle it is!). In our office, we do use a chemical peel during a standard dermaplane facial, but it can always be done without it, making it safe for all skin types and tones.
