Fast Five About Fillers: Dermal Fillers 101

Updated: Jan 14

What are fillers?

Dermal fillers are minimally invasive treatments made of a gel-like solutions. They are injected into your skin to add fullness and volume to certain areas of the face. They also work to diminish the appearance of fine lines and can even be used to enhance features like cheek contours and facial structure.

Are they safe?

Absolutely! Fillers are an injectable form of hyaluronic acid gel that varies in consistency (depending on the specific product used). Because Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring carbohydrate in the body, it is completely safe. And it is completely reversible. Though we are confident you will LOVE your results, fillers are dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase. It can be injected into the filler and will “undo” any results you are unhappy with. We always keep the reversal agent on hand, giving our patients (especially those getting fillers for the first time) peace of mind.

It is absolutely necessary to receive injections from licensed and trained medical professionals. Even though facial fillers can be purchased online for self-injection, this is INCREDIBLY dangerous. Even though the product itself is completely safe, there is risk of both aesthetic and heal-related complications if they are injected incorrectly. If you are considering dermal fillers, please reach out to a professional.

How do I choose which type of filler to use?

You don’t have to choose yourself, and, quite frankly, you shouldn’t! Because every individual is different, with different body composition, needs, and wants, and every dermal filler is slightly different, we have a consultation prior to any injection to discuss your goals. From there, we will decide together which filler is right for you.

During the consultation, we also consider all the following:

1. The issues you’d like to correct

2. The area of your face you’d like to treat

3. How long you want the results to last

4. Your health history

We use fillers from the Juvederm, Voluma, and Restylane product lines. We will work together to establish a treatment plan that you are comfortable with and that will achieve your goals.

Because each dermal filler is different, your results can last anywhere between six months and two years based on the product, the area of the face injected, and the amount of product injected during your treatment.

Where can I get fillers injected?

There are many places dermal fillers can be injected, here are a few facial dermal filler locations we offer here at MedSkin Essentials.

1) Lips: Lip filler can be used to redefine the border of your lips and add volume. It can also improve your lips’ symmetry. Filler naturally hydrates which can correct wrinkles and add a subtle softness to your lips. As with all fillers, we customize your lip filler so that the size and fullness is exactly what you want- whether you want to make a statement, or for the only person who knows of your injection is you, your lip filler will be exactly what you want. No matter what, our goal is to make you feel more beautiful after your appointment.

2) Tear Troughs (Under Eyes): When people say “you look tired,” they are often referring to sunken hollows under your eyes. Moms, especially, can relate to the dark under eye circles that birthed the term “mombie.” Fillers can fill out the hollows, reduce the dark circles, and help blend under eye bags!

3) Cheeks: Though it may seem counter intuitive, cheek filler creates a slimming affect. Filler does not mean “fatter!” Cheek filler adds contour and lifts your face without surgery to give you amazing shape and structure to your already beautiful natural face.

4) Nasolabial Folds: Nasolabial folds are the lines or wrinkles that run from the side of the nose down to the outer corner of the mouth. Dermal fillers injected here are used to soften and reduce the appearance of the fold.

5) Acne Scars: Even if you’ve gotten a handle on your skin care, and no longer suffer from acne, scarring from previous breakouts can be frustrating. Filler can reduce and, in some cases, completely eliminate acne scars! Dermal filler will smooth out and fill in pock marks as well as reduce scar pigmentation.

Will I still look like myself?

Yes! Patients are often concerned that fillers will make them look “plastic.” You won’t. Dermal fillers are a great tool to enhance your natural beauty, not change it. Even though there are examples of over-filled celebrities on ET and TMZ, they represent the minority of filler patients. When done well, fillers do nothing more than refresh your natural beauty. We believe that less is more and will work with you to achieve the look you want, without overdoing it. Check out our Gallery for Before and After photos.
