Filler Dissolver
In Riverside and Orange County
Hylenex is an injectable enzyme called hyaluronidase that safely and quickly dissolves hyaluronic acid dermal fillers already under the skin. It works by breaking down the hyaluronic acid molecules in a filler, allowing your body to reabsorb the product naturally. Hylenex is most often used to correct filler results a patient isn't happy with, such as too much volume, asymmetry, lumps or nodules, or product that has migrated from the original injection site. It's also the emergency reversal agent injectors keep on hand in the rare event of a vascular complication, which is why we always have it available for every filler appointment.
Your Hylenex Treatment
Your injector will examine the treated area and determine how much Hylenex is needed to dissolve the targeted filler. The enzyme is injected directly into the area with a fine needle, and most treatments take less than 30 minutes. Depending on how much filler needs to be reversed, you may need more than one injection point, and larger volumes occasionally require a follow-up session a few days later to finish dissolving the product completely.
Common Areas Treated With Hylenex
Because hyaluronic acid filler is used in so many areas of the face, Hylenex can be injected virtually anywhere filler has been placed. The most common areas we treat include the lips, where overfilling or asymmetry is a frequent concern, along with the cheeks and midface, where filler can sometimes settle unevenly or create excess volume. We also use Hylenex to correct filler in the under-eye area, where thin skin makes lumps or a bluish discoloration called the Tyndall effect more noticeable, as well as along the jawline, chin, and nasolabial folds when results look overdone or migrate from the original injection point.
Results and Recovery
Hylenex starts breaking down hyaluronic acid filler almost immediately, and most patients notice a visible reduction in volume within 24 to 48 hours. There is minimal downtime, though mild swelling, redness, or bruising at the injection site is common for a day or two. Once the filler has fully dissolved, we recommend waiting about two weeks before receiving new filler in the same area so your skin has time to settle and heal.
Combining Hylenex With Other Treatments
Hylenex is rarely a standalone visit. Many patients use it as the first step toward a completely new look, dissolving old or uneven filler so a fresh treatment plan can be built from scratch, often with a different Juvéderm formula or a switch to SkinVive for a more natural, hydrated finish. Because Hylenex only targets hyaluronic acid, it can be layered into the same appointment as Botox or Dysport without any interference, letting you address volume and movement-related lines in a single visit. Some patients also pair a Hylenex correction with a laser or skincare treatment once swelling has resolved, using the reset as an opportunity to refresh their entire treatment plan rather than just one area.
Who Can Benefit from Hylenex?
Hylenex is a good option if you’re unhappy with the results of a previous filler treatment, whether that’s overfilled lips, asymmetry, firm lumps, or filler that has shifted out of place, or if you simply want a clean slate before trying a different product or injector.
It’s important to know that Hylenex only dissolves hyaluronic acid–based fillers, including Juvéderm, lip filler, SkinVive, and filler used in facial balancing treatments. It does not dissolve fillers made from other materials, such as Sculptra or calcium hydroxylapatite fillers.
Most patients in good general health are candidates, though those with a known allergy to hyaluronidase should discuss alternative options with their injector at consultation.
