Subscision

Subcision is a minimally invasive treatment used to treat acne scars and other types of cutaneous scarring. This includes wrinkling and cellulite. Cutaneous scars are formed when thick, fibroblastic or connective tissue replaces normal skin tissue during the healing process. Subcision breaks up these fibrous bands to release the skin, allowing it to lift upward and smooth out. This treatment also triggers a new wound healing process with additional collagen production to plump, firm, and smooth the skin.

Your Subcision Treatment

Subcision is performed in one of our comfortable treatment rooms under local anesthetic. The anesthetic will numb the treatment area so that you do not feel any pain. Your aesthetician will insert a hypertrophic needle into the skin beneath the scar and gentle move it back and forth. This needle will break up and release the tightened collagen fibers and connective tissues beneath the skin.

Who Can Benefit from Subcision?

Men and women with depressed scars and uneven skin texture can benefit from subcision. This treatment might not be helpful for hypertrophic scars and keloid scars that are raised above the skin’s surface. Please let us know if you have a blood clotting disorder or bacterial or viral infection. These conditions along with an active acne breakout may prevent you from receiving treatment. If you are not a suitable candidate for subcision, we can recommend a chemical peel or laser skin resurfacing.

Results and Recovery

After subcision, mild swelling and bruising are common and will take about 1-2 weeks to heal. Swelling and discomfort can be alleviated with ice packs and over-the-counter pain medication. Once your skin is healed, there will no scarring left by the needle. Multiple treatments may be needed, depending on the size and severity of the scar(s). As your skin reproduces collagen and the swelling settles, you will gradually see your scar fade away.
